Joan Fontcuberta

(Barcelona, 1955 - )

The sign that identifies his artwork is a concept: doubt. Photography that deals with uncertainty. He works with the world of appearances to question truths that no one refutes. He documents the framework, the anecdotal, to make people believe that something has happened, even though it did not occur. He plays with ambiguity through the mechanism of appropriation that provokes reflections about authorship. He only needs to stage a framework of suitable influences (press, institutions such as the museum, advertising...) to emphasize that sometimes the readings are erroneous. As well as being an artist, Joan Fontcuberta is a critic, teacher, exhibition curator and author who founded Photovision magazine. His works have been exhibited in international museums such as the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Art Institute in Chicago.
