MIGUEL RASERO

Glòria Bosch

Every day you have to take on a new challenge, eagerly and full of life’s energy, as if alone on a tightrope: “But when the Angel is announced, stand alone to receive him. The Angel, for us, is evening fallen on the dazzling arena. If your solitude, paradoxically, is spotlighted, and the darkness made up of a thousand eyes judging you, fearing and hoping for your fall, it matters little.”[1]

Walking above the void... Life walks above the void, an empty hole filled with time, space, earth, anxiety and desire, but we always breathe balanced on an unstable tightrope. I observe works which, like life, are created in passing. I don’t...

Rasero’s inner monologue advances along a tightrope stretched across the void, fragile and uncertain. To feel excluded from a world you think you do not belong to, and at the same time to live life in full strength. You become a tightrope walker on the line uniting past and future, performing a balancing act to avoid falling into nothingness, your entire life throbbing in your face. This is an ongoing metaphor on precarious equilibrium, in homage to Jean Genet and his work The Tightrope Walker.

In Juicio final [Final Judgement], Rasero again refers to the fragility and uncertainty of human existence, with a large-format work featuring sets of wood piled into two groups, preserving a precarious equilibrium. In the middle of this piece we find a point of balance that could represent a turning point. This is when we ask ourselves if painting arises from out of an inner monologue or whether it is only a way to incite dialogue. Only we have the key.

Attracted by the exploration of other creative techniques, Rasero looks back to focus on the simplicity of the brushstroke in those drawings that adorned Greek ceramics or the ancient frescoes at Pompeii. They were simple tracings, although the design was sophisticated, like those early visual depictions of the first neural studies. As Rasero claims, he is an artist who likes to change what he is wearing in function of the song that is playing. Lightness conceals the contrast between the corporeal and the ethereal, between the weightlessness of space and gravity.

With various references to contemporary artists, Rasero plays with abstract expressionism and basic colour ranges. This intense energy helps to revive the painting that some were trying to do away with, as a way of putting impulse before common sense, and so break with rigid customs. Now there is a new paradigm, a never-ending horizon waiting for someone to ride into it, unrestricted creation making it possible to enjoy the process. Sometimes the inner monologue is also about this, about letting go and exploring other creative paths. Rasero’s tightrope artist is sometimes immersed in structures like the ones we see here, colourful rooms.

We are often called to explore inside and out to transform the process of creation and look for a new position. It is rather painful to emerge from out of this inner blindness, and many become trapped in the psychic conflict whereby we are required to be everything that is inside of us, without knowing if there is really anything there. To escape from this blind spot you must look outside, which is why Rasero chooses to do a still life, De Vegetabilibus, with wood and constructivist techniques. He searches for elements of nature that might make up part of the work, as in the case of the series Barraca [Shack], where simple materials fit perfectly.

The work Crucifixion takes us back to a universe with a fragile, solitary atmosphere, to a metaphor of existence, of life and death. Here you feel alone before the horizon, with no god before you to guide you, or finding yourself on a tightrope where the slightest error could have terrible consequences. Here you navigate amidst mortal sins in a rebellious way, thus feeding the source of imagination that would be transformed into the material of art, where the universe would become the saving redemption of all error.

In the work El sueño del arquitecto [The Dream of the Architect], a character is seen going to great lengths to avoid crossing the threshold that separates us from the abyss. It is a work that has unconsciously accompanied the artist in recent years, in a journey from here to there and back again. The work is especially relevant as the deconstruction of Rasero’s creative process, where previous concerns are evident. Meanwhile, it also discovers and anticipates what his future research will be in the study of space.

Summer appears quite out of nowhere, with bright colours in total calm, with nothing moving at all. Summer is our garden of delights, where time is slow and monotonous, often making you feel like you have dropped anchor in the middle of a warm, silent ocean. And then, suddenly, summer is over. Seasons go by, and nature continues to be held within its cycle of eternal return. This is the sensation we get from the series entitled De Vegetabilibus.

To walk above the void, over an abyss filled with time, space, concerns and desire, but always breathing on the fragility of the tightrope. Every day we are called upon to face new challenges with our energy at total capacity, fully alive. This time, we do not walk on the rope, but rather hold it tightly and gather ourselves to make mockery of this fragility that scares us so much, with no fear for such disturbing uncertainty.
