TWO-WAY MIRROR

His vision of the world is constructed on, and especially, for travel.

Joaquim Noguero[1]

The White Queen considered it an advantage that her memory worked in two ways, because to work in only one would be to have “a poor sort of memory”. It is not a question of keeping within the boundaries of these ways but to cross them, be it a mirror or a wall that blocks the way - the inversions of a life constructed on and for travel, which is why in her project Two-Way Mirror Carmen Mariscal lets herself be guided throughout by intuition, without following a rational process. The references and encounters that are generated always come from subsequent...

A face observes candidly the viewer. Carmen Marshal, with this series of images references us to Alicia through Lewis's mirror Carroll. For the artist, the beauty, the simplicity, the representation of the body, goes in in conflict with the image projected in the mirror. The body, symbol of resistance, is also the need and the projection of the canons of beauty and social stereotypes that appears reflected in a reflecting surface. It finds subject also to the subjectivity of the viewer. The identity is an element that is born and projects and at the same time perceive as a answer of this same projection.

The central themes of Mariscal's work encompass the human body, identity and humanity. Under a layer of marmolea represents the human body, deprived of perfection with which it is customary to present the image of women in art. The roughness and roughness of the rock, combined with the body, enhances the idea of carnality. This one is hidden in a spectral way. Femininity plays a prominent role in the image, where the woman covers or caresses her body. The body seems to breathe under a halo of nostalgia bestowed by the flaky texture of the rock.

The navel occupies the center position in an image with abstract tendencies. This, being considered the origin of fertility and reproduction can be an analogy of the universe. A small portion of life in the middle of the immensity. This delicate image of the artist presents in a schematic, rather than simple, the concept of life and origin. We are faced with a disconcerting work that plays between the ambiguity and the appeal of the obvious and the hidden. Motherhood appears to us as an echo of creation and life. The navel is the memory and reminder of the capacity of life to continue reproducing, a reminder of who we are.

Identity plays an important role in this work of Mariscal. The debate between what we are, what we believe to be and our different facets of identity, seem to interweave with two braids that stand out from an image to end up also interwoven between them. We, concepts that embrace and make us debate. Identity can be fragmented, it can unfold, but finally it is the communion of all these parts that stands out to reality as a living organism. The self-portraits serve the artist to deal with universal themes which in turn we understand as intimate. The organic matter of this work serves as an anchor to the different parts that conjugate us.

Carmen Mariscal rescues the book Alice through the mirror, as a memory of childhood, to work on the idea of the past. The video I make for this exhibition is the one that made up the rest of the images that accompanied this exhibition. I work on the idea of the memory I had of the novel, without rereading it, because I wanted to work on the memory, on the concept of mirror, of unfolding and of identity. The past and the memory, changed by the experiences interpreted through the emotions of oneself, form a subjective reality, things are as one feels them.

The work of Mariscal pivots between photography, video, installation. In the series Without Exit we find objects that combine these disciplines. The photographs, mounted and printed, are transformed into sculptures in which, thanks to the mirror, the spectator becomes a participant. In this particular case, a woman with braids, covers her face with her hands. On top of this, a mirror reflects what lies ahead. The spectator is forced to become the individual of the work and be its central axis. Your identity is the one that comes into play. Our presence becomes the present of the work, being this timeless.

The object found is sometimes part of the artist's work. In this case it is not a random object, but it is a past object that brings memories to memory. These become a kind of talisman capable of evoking an experience of the past. Memory is sometimes an instrument to recreate one's identity, which is formed not only by the genetic factor but also by the accumulation of experiences lived through the years. In this case, the book Alice through the mirror belonged to her mother-in-law. Through fragments of the book, the superposition of these with the original illustrations of Sir John Tenniel and the images of faces, the artist speaks of the past, perhaps with some nostalgia.

Haptic resin faces, placed one after another and joined by braids that intertwine to form a catenary of personalities. Representations of a stereotypical and expressionless woman rest static side by side. Although all seem to maintain the same expression, the absence with which the artist plays, invites us to perform an introspection. We can only assume that it happens in the minds of the characters. We assume that it is the same fragmented individual. A splitting that allows to visualize the different aspects that make up a single unit. This, indivisible would not make sense without all the parts that form it.

Mariscal spoke in one of his motherhood series. Through photographs he made about the various changes through which his body passed, as well as the work I did on the concept of body as a receptacle of life, posed us, with a formal aspect very similar to this image, the complexity of Of birth and life. In this image we contemplate a similar concept in which the represented subject intuits that it is in its first week of life. Again the artist lets us intuit, rather than teach. It plays with the subtlety of the ambiguity when introducing us a body on the one hand seems an inert substance and on the other it lets us perceive a weak human heartbeat.
